Chasing UP in Niles Canyon And Altamont Pass
On May 10, 2022, happened to catch the IOANP (Oakland to North Platte) running through Niles Canyon and Sunol. I decided to meet it at the Greenville trestle at Altamont and was lucky to launch the drone just in time.

Large Permanente Local 6-3-15
Переглядів 1,3 тис.9 років тому
The 'Perm' was larger than usual today and worth a chase. I stuck around to watch some of the operations. Plenty of wind and dust made for some interesting shots. In the last clip, the crew looks like it stopped to chat with someone at the crossing.... Photos: flic.kr/p/tbqr8z flic.kr/p/tbfnm7 flic.kr/p/tQPmd6

UP 3988, UP 4026 and UP 5262 apparently switched Economy Lumber in Campbell before heading to the Lehigh cement plant in Cupertino for empty hoppers.
UP Repo Job 4-21-14

Was lucky enough to catch this large UP repo job headed south on the Coast subdivision (thanks to the headsupnorcal yahoo list). It was quite windy so the video is a little shaky. UP 4278/4678/7926/4881/8674/7190/9237/5056/4389
Rare SP Oregon Helper Move
Переглядів 48 тис.10 років тому
Transferred from my Dad's old VHS footage from around 1986 at Odell Lake, Oregon (East of Cascade Summit). The clip contains a rare 9 engine helper consist with 2 road slug (TEBU?) units. Lots of good scanner chatter between the crew as they bring the first cut up the hill and return with the second part of the train.
Caltrain 1985 (Part 2)

Imported from old VHS clips my Dad took of Caltrain in Santa Clara around 1985 at the Hedding St. overpass. Train #1: Interesting mix of SP SDP45, with a Harriman car and Caltrain gallery cars Train #2: Notice the yard action in the distance....

SP Roseville Yard 1986 (Part 2)
Переглядів 6 тис.11 років тому
Imported from old VHS footage of the SP Roseville yard circa 1986. Clips of one very large manifest with Denver and Rio Grande SD45T-2s on point and a very large cut of helpers in the middle. In the middle of the clip, while the helpers are being cut out, a second manifest leaves the yard....bonus caboose and DPU at the end.

Large Union Pacific manifest at Truckee (2-25-12)
I'm just awe struck. That's a huge amount of power and even bigger amount of torque given that the slugs only provide pulling force and not horsepower. How heavy was that train that it needed that many helpers and it still needed to be brought up in parts?
Three sdp45s
A MANNED CABOOSE and a MANNED HELPER......A W E S O M E !!!!
Like SO MUCH !!!! I bought my first video camera in January of 1988 so you got footage 2 years before me. It is interesting that between this video and my first video at this location 2 years later you CAN see differences already happening. One thing I noticed is that the carfleet was still all Southern Pacific as SP had not yet been forced to liquidate it s own carfleet to raise survival level cash. After that happened you started seeing The Golden West cars appearing.
You know my favorite part of this Video? ALL OF IT !!!
That is good business right there at the end. I highly recommend Trainz for the PC and a good rig with a bunch of DLC. for me, it comes in very close to the real thing.
Train #1 and #2 are both at Mott siding.
AWESOME!!! Gyralite packages EVERYWHERE on both ends....as God intended!
History for railroad nut, me. I love things like this.
Cool video and channel just subscribed
I like this video too Thank you It s nice to have stuff like this preserved
YEAH.....KEEP POSTING!
Love it! Thumbs up!! Cheers!!
A lot head end power on the first clip
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish Gyrolite headlights put it back!!
Do you have any footage near the Agnew State Hospital?
That belching exhaust at the end was fantastic. Must see more.
They weren't even pulling anything. EPA tier -2
Love the consist!!! Harriman sub and modern bi-levels headed by a classic MARS fitted F45PH.
When I worked at North 1st and Trimble, my buddy and I used to take off at lunch and railfan this exact area. Used to hang around the Lenzen Ave roundhouse too, and the College Park tower, all long gone ... 1985 was a great transition era for diesel modellers, with SD9s, SD45PHs, and F40PHs all working Caltrain, and the last two on Amtrak as well.
Thats a lot of help
Nice !!!
Yeah baby, 5 tunnel motors and an SD45 powering up! Smoking up a storm too ... I once caught 11 units eastbound out of the Dunsmuir yard most of the units were deadheading but still, it was quite a sight! Wasn't it a bit unusual to have such a mongamous SD45-T2 helper BEHIND the caboose?
cti containers are extinct like dinosaurs
Biden wants everything to run on batteries! Eveready or Duracell?
Derailment somewhere on the Valley Line because the Espee don't run Intermodal trains on the Coast Line
history in action! wow, 9 engines is quite a bit!
phenomenal video thank you for posting
I wonder if 5399 was in that consist
Did railroads ever wash their cabooses? I know that SP's engines, in later years, were as grimy as a Penn Central unit.
Nice Triclops and freshly painted SD70M!

👍👍👍👍🤟 têm eu gosto muito de têm
2:35 all that smoke belching out. Cool!
The up loco @2:32 shows how dirty the espee and drgw units really are!
Love to see espee equipment! They shoulda kept those k5las and gyras on those f40s!
Actually, the SDP45's were bought to replace the remaining E-units that were still in service as of May 1, 1971
Awesome bro great vid
these videos hit different 🥵
There’s not many teens like me that are into this stuff 😩🤧 I’m not like the other gurls yk 😔✋
Omg this is such a great video for a nerd like me 😍😍😍 ✨ty from a nerd to a nerdd
Those screaming turbos!
Man I miss the SP. I can remember hours spent under the San Carlos overpass or behind the OSH there watching the endless Caltrains and SP freights pass by.
Great vídeo
Why didn't u keep filmn!???
Good video. I'm a retired hoghead from Dunsmuir. I hired out on the Sacramento Division in Roseville in 1972. In 1983 I transferred my seniority to the Oregon Division as it was called then. This division was created by combining the old Shasta and Portland Divisions around 1971 or so. The third train with the helper behind the cab is a bit unusual for this time. Usually we would run the helper backwards so we'd be running in the right direction if returning to Dunsmuir as a lite engine. I was a Road Foreman of Engines headquartered at Dunsmuir from 1984 to 1987. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Sigh................
Harold smirh used to work for the S P MAKING BOILERS..
♥.♥ Nice engine sound, but very polluting...
As an 8 year old kid living in Dunsmuir near the north end of the yard, my friends and I used to pick the blackberries that grew in huge bushes next to the river and tracks so when we saw the gyro light flashing in the distance, we knew to hurry up and get clear. Not many of those berries made it home, they were sooo good!
As a kid I lived in Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta (1973-78) and lived next to the rails, dad was a conductor of SP then, was incredible to see the Freedom Train and SP 4449 back in the day. I loved the weather of Mt. Shasta, way too many weird hippies up there (aka: liberals). I remember as the weather got warmer, them creosote on the ties started to smell more and more. And yes, I model the SP and UP in HO scale now, lol. I'm grateful for whoever took the time to make this video.
A hit and miss warning bell.
Wish that Union Pacific had at least one or two engines in the Rio Grande speed lettering instead of the 1989 heritage unit!
